Biogas Plant

Biogas is a renewable energy source which can be used in multiple ways, including power generation, heating or as a biofuel. It can be produced from various feedstocks such as agricultural residues like straws, manure, slurry, plant material and organic waste (food waste, etc).

Biogas refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the biochemical breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen (Anaerobic conditions). Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion with methanogen or anaerobic organisms, which digest or ferments the biodegradable components of feedstock. This closed system is called an anaerobic digester or biodigester or a bioreactor. After the biogas extraction from feedstocks, the residual part of feed stocks can be used as manure for agriculture and to improve the soil quality.

Biogas can be used for electricity production on sewage works, in a CHP gas engine, where the waste heat from the engine is conveniently used for heating the digester; cooking; space heating; water heating; and process heating. If compressed, it can replace compressed natural gas for use in vehicles, where it can fuel an internal combustion engine or fuel cells and is a much more effective displacer of carbon dioxide than the normal use in on-site CHP plants.
